Seth Meyers From Home: Trump Brags About His Ratings During Coronavirus Pandemic [VIDEO]

Politics • Views: 20,638

YouTube

You know, I’m starting to prefer these late night comedians without an audience. I don’t really need to hear other people laughing to tell whether something’s funny or not.

Seth takes a closer look at the president bragging about his TV ratings during the coronavirus pandemic, suggesting states were lying about how many ventilators they need and blaming health care workers for the lack of protective masks.

I like it better without the audience too. I wish Seth would realize that his Trump impressions aren’t very good. I think my favorite is Bob Cesca’s.

Alex Jones and the popular culture of conspiracy theories and theorists that blew up after 9/11 and Obama’s election I think is one of the most disturbing elements of our century. We have access to more information than we did in the past but we aren’t processing it. There’s a lot of bullshit out there.

Went home to NJ a few months back and ran into an old acquaintance who spouted just about every conspiracy theory in the Alex Jones portfolio and perhaps some others in the span of about an hour. I just listened. It was like the proverbial fire hose of derp.

If Burning Man is still happening in August, everyone in the SF Bay Area who can should hunker down and self isolate. Enough of San Francisco leaves for Burning Man that it risks being another reinfection locus….

these people are going to get infected and pass it.

‘flattening the curve’ doesnt mean “it’s over”
it means globally, nationally, or regionally, we’ve averted a worse disaster

get used to it:
- washing, social distancing, limiting contact, travel etc….
- these things are going to be with us for a good long while
- way more than a couple of ‘inconvenient’ months or even a year.
(at least for those of us who want to minimize the chances of getting or passing it.)

Updated US economic forecast from Goldman Sachs:

Q1: -9% (from -6%)
Q2: -34% (from -24%)

2020: -6.2% (from -3.7%)

Mid year unemployment:
15% (from 9%)]

Had Trump been able to display one iota of leadership, people would have rallied around him and even economic news like this would not be enough to sink him.

But he lacks the knowledge, experience and personality to lead in a crisis, only to bullshit his way out of a tight corner. But this corner is too tight.

Politico: “The Trump administration is telling hospitals they can split ventilators between two patients and is escalating calls to scrap elective surgeries, as federal officials try to limit care rationing in facilities lacking the critical breathing machines. New federal guidelines on so-called ventilator splitting — an idea that’s been used extremely rarely in emergency situations — emphasizes it should ‘only be considered as an absolute last resort’ for hospitals swamped by coronavirus patients.”

They’re also looking at taking other types of life support gear and converting it to ventilator capable tools.

Belgium new case reports are substantially lower than their highest days. But they also report a large jump in additional deaths.

Ben Shapiro thinks striking workers are the same as price gougers and should be fired, saying they’re striking “not because of bad worker pay, but because [they] just want more money”

They are striking for safety equipment and hazard pay.

They are doing a much different job than the one they signed on for.

Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Mar 31, 2020 • 12:06:37pm

Fundies are notoriously handsy and hugsy. Years ago, I got hornswoggled into visiting a fundy church in Denton. At one point, the visitors were asked to raise their hands so they could be welcomed. I did so without thinking. Before I realized it, a woman I had never met before grabbed me, enfolded me in a bear hug, and squeezed so hard I could feel her nipples. I was astonished to say the least, though it was not the worst thing that could have happened. I also had a new clue to how these cults maintain loyalty and interest, especially since they are working with a basically repressed population.

People like Patrick Ruffini think that it’s the capitalists and pharmaceuticals who will save the country from the pandemic, but it’s clear that competent govt is how to get through this, because it can marshal the resources in a way that capitalists never would - it makes sure that the goods go where they’re needed.

People like Patrick Ruffini think that it’s the capitalists and pharmaceuticals who will save the country from the pandemic, but it’s clear that competent govt is how to get through this, because it can marshal the resources in a way that capitalists never would - it makes sure that the goods go where they’re needed.

and would / should also ensure that most of the profit motive is removed from the equation

Why is the concept of not bunching up so hard for legislators?

My niece was supposed to get married in May. Rabbi, catered sit-down dinner for 100, band, video team, etc.

Instead… sister-in-law got internet ordained, and they did a “service” at the house with 5 guests a month ago. Maybe we’ll do a big party for their one-year anniversary. (also cancelled nephew’s med school graduation party; his entire class is starting their internships early, and their diplomas will be mailed to them.)

But in some cases the effort to let the public know the severity of the situation is running up against hospital administrators who want to muzzle front-line healthcare workers, Bloomberg reports.

An emergency room doctor in Washington state was fired after doing a newspaper interview about inadequate protective gear and testing. NYU Langone Health has told workers that talking to the media without permission could cost them their jobs. And in Chicago, a nurse was fired for emailing her colleagues—not even the media—about wanting better protective gear.

Within the first minute — “spanish flu or swine flu, it killed about 675 thousand” (in the US):

1918 Spanish Flu historical documentary | Swine Flu Pandemic | Deadly plague of 1918

I’ll keep the math here as simple as I possibly can.
Q1: How many times can 200,000 be doubled, to exceed 675,000?
1doublings —> 400,000
2doublings —> 800,000 (exceeds 675,000)

The 200,000 # deaths in US in near future is based on a model for Covid-19 that assumes we can (possibly, in the short term) slow down and limit its spread in the US to about 3% of the US population, for a while.

Q2: How many times can 3% be doubled, to reach ~50% or ~100% (of US population)?
1doublings —> 6%
2doublings —> 12%
3doublings —> 24%
4doublings —> 48%
5doublings —> 96% (It is likely to stop short of this.)

Q3: How long is a doubling time?
Unchecked, it seems to be ~3 to ~5 days. Rate of spread depends very much on human behavior, and details of how we interact.

Older people remember black-and-white movies in which a handkerchief in a suit-pocket (or a purse) was not only “fashionable” but (in most places) also a matter of state and local law, for several decades.

The Spanish Flu of 1918-1919 was a training excercise, compared to what we are now facing. Most the world is still in denial about how serious this is.

There really isn’t one! Haha, I’m making this up as I go.

For the beans, it was 3 sprigs of fresh dill with I think 4 cloves of garlic and roughly a teaspoon each of mustard and dill seed, along with ~20 black peppercorns, slightly smashed in the mortar and pestle.

For the onions, 5 cloves of garlic, half a teaspoon each (roughly) of the mustard and dill seed and maybe 10ish black peppercorns.

Roughly 1Tbsp salt to 2 cups of water for the brine.

We are still at the front end of this pandemic. While people are anxious about the deaths so far, it appears as if only a tiny fraction of our population have been infected.

Unless there have been vastly more infected than the case counts currently show, which some people who want to downplay Covid-19 keep proposing, then we have to keep the social distancing/lockdowns in place until a vaccine is developed, or else this pandemic will end up being the biggest depopulation event since WWII.

Last week I had some random coughs, and my chest sort of hurt when taking a breath. But I had no fever, no headache, no pains, no loss of taste, etc. So I guess I could have already been infected and been mostly asymptomatic.

But I sort of doubt it.

Hopefully, in another month or so, we’ll have the antibodies tests up and running and you’ll be able to find out!

Okay, maybe the month timeline is optimistic. Sure, they’re rolling them out in other countries but …yeah.

My sister keeps pushing the “testing is unknown so the disease is actually far more prevalent than it seems” narrative, which is driving me nuts because at an approximated 1% death rate (give or take a couple of points), that would be a LOT of dead people.

Trump’s idea of trying to open everything back up by easter was omega-level stupid, of course, but months on end of shelter in place really is going to hammer the hell out of the economy.

IMO the most rational policy response is UBI, but Republicans will never do it, and doing it as quickly as it would be needed would also pose real problems.

The 1918 flu pandemic killed about one out of every 160 Americans.

The current Covid-19 CFR is about four times that in the US.

So if indeed there are 10 people infected for every detected case then this pandemic will kill a smaller share of the population than the 1918 pandemic.

It’s pretty clear we are undertesting in the US and therefore undercounting the current number of infections. We know this because of data from other places where they are testing a lot - there’s no way that our hospitalization/death rate is that much higher. So if you figure that hospitalizations is ~20% of cases (and I’m including deaths in the hospitalization numbers, here, because if you die it’s a severe case and severe cases should be hospitalized) …we’re missing a lot of the milder ones.

Which makes sense, because we’re saving the tests for places where they’re the most useful, because our leadership is a giant fuck-up and completely unhelpful.

That said, you can sort of extrapolate backwards from the hospitalization rate (which is hard to come by, haha, super useful) or death rate (which lags by a LOT) to get a better estimate of the lower bound of cases we have in the country right now. Of course, since both of those are lagging indicators, it’s still going to undercount current cases.

The right thing to do is to assume that it is a lot more prevalent for the purposes of protecting yourself and your family but not to take that as a sign that the death rate is lower than believed (I think the best estimate of the infected-fatality ratio we have right now is ~0.7% from a study in The Lancet based off of Chinese data - CFR is pretty much always going to be higher than IFR during the epidemic because it is easier to measure, IFR has to be estimated - and this is still WAY HIGHER than the flu so stay the fuck home).

It could be the death rate is actually lower than we believe because so many mild cases are going completely undetected.

The problem is, there are now a lot of testing going on. And about 90% of the tests come back negative, in Florida for example.

The people chosen for this testing includes those who were in contact with the positives. So if this pool of possible candidates is still coming back at 90% negative, the rest of the population who have no known contact with positives are unlikely to test positive at a higher rate than possible contactees.

Until we do a large random sample with the antibody test we won’t know.

On the flip side, there are a lot of cases out there with symptoms consistent with the virus that cannot get tested because they aren’t in contact with a known positive or don’t fall into one of the high risk groups.

That said, the 90% number doesn’t surprise me because one of the early studies about spread in the US was that only about 10% of household contacts with known cases developed the virus. The number was lower for non-household close contacts.

My hunch is that there are a lot of undiagnosed cases that aren’t going to get reported. In part because of the asymptomatic nature of this virus and in part because mild cases are not going to have access to testing. In theory, this means while we might see a 1% death rate for known cases, the overall number will be drastically lower. Of course, the other problem is that if the known cases overrun the health care system, we’re all fucked because there will be spill over effects for everyone not dealing with bad cases of COVID-19.

Currently in the US the CFR is around 2%, not 1%.

And here is what troubles me: in countries which have good health care systems (better than the US), the CFR is rising all the while the case numbers (and test numbers) are rising.

Germany’s CFR has risen quite a bit, now over 1%.

South Korea’s CFR has been rising, over 1%, and they’ve done a lot of testing.

Belgium’s CFR is now over 5%.

The Netherland’s CFR is now around 8%.

And these are places that have yet to get into the deep hole that Italy (and now Spain) have entered where the health providers are now unable to provide.

So SARS-Cov-2 is striking me like the original SARS and MERS. The latest variant is not as deadly as those two, but still considerable compared to the usual viruses we deal with.

Are we virtuous?

Here’s a confession — I’ve never taken the annual Flu vaccination.

Even more striking, my wife, currently suffering a clear (untested) case of COVID-19, who is a nursing assistant in an old people’s care facility (EPHAD) has never taken the annual flu vaccination. Most of her cow-orkers didn’t either.

Why? We’re young (early 60’s), we’ve never been seriously ill, we’re immortal, right?

We’ve all got to take this shit more seriously.

I’ve gotten annual flu shots and have gotten the flu twice in the past 5 years. Not severe in either case, but enough to lay me low for a bit.

We would all do so much better if we required annual vaccinations for the flu and mandatory vaccinations for all the common diseases for which vaccinations are available - no exceptions except for medical necessity.

This isn’t about religious beliefs, because there aren’t any religious groups that object to vaccination. People who ignore vaccinations and public health are a public threat to all people.

This pandemic once again makes that explicitly clear.

My son can get an absentee ballot anyway because of the PA rule “College students who are not registered to vote at their school address”. He is registered up here at our address, but has an apartment, goes to college and works 45 minutes south of here. Daily count update is done here. There’s 42 new cases today, two new deaths. If you consider some of yesterday’s spike as having been missing from previous days …you can actually start to see the curve flattening.

Which it should be, given that today is 2 weeks of shelter-in-place being active in the area.

Unrelated but I ran 166.6 miles this month, half of which was done while under shelter-in-place. You can still be active, you just gotta have your 6ft bubble. :) (Streak count at 93 days and going.)

According to estimates for expected hospital resource use on this site, since last Friday the peak in Texas has been pushed from April 18 to May 5th. Even given expected inaccuracy that would indicate we’re at least flattening the curve somewhat. I just wish you could zero in to the major metro areas like Harris and Dallas county. I fear statewide averages could look very survivable, while our major city hospitals are facing a tidal wave.

Yeah. The hospitalization peak is going to lag somewhat behind the case peak too (and then the death peak after that…). Plus the cumulative effects, because this is not a short hospitalization for those who require it.

The black death killed somewhere between 75-200 million people over a 7 year period. Half of the Paris population died. Overall, the world population dropped by something like 20-25%.

To get there, we’d need something like 1.5-2 billion people to die.

So a debate between Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo on whether to cover Trump’s daily campaign rally in total. Cuomo makes the comment that Trump is learning — and that is what I fear. He is learning how to present himself so that the American audience, which has the memory of a gnat, will see that he has finally taken control and handled this catastrophe — a catastrophe entirely of his own making. He is becoming “Presidential”, because he will be adjusting his con to appeal to a wider variety of the imbecilic voters of this nation. Listening to a constant barrage of lies just makes you more susceptible to the liar.

Well the doctor’s appointment was interesting. I got my temp taken at the front desk and it was normal. I filled out a questionnaire about where I’ve been and who I’ve been near (I brought my own pen), They had everything set up so that we were at least 8’ apart.

My doctor and I started talking about what’s going on and he kind of came down as someone who wants things to get back to normal asap. He was ragging on people who wouldn’t come in to work. He said a few things I would disagree with but I didn’t want to argue with a doctor, I just listened and replied “interesting”. We eventually started talking about hi-fi gear. I see him again in 6 months.

NYC has experienced more deaths from covid19 than they’ve seen homicides in any single year since 1996. More deaths than 2018, 2017, and 2016 combined.

And that toll is rising steadily. So while the law and order types were demanding crackdowns and action for those murders, there’s no indication that they’ll go after Trump whose failures have resulted in more than 1000 dead in NYC and nearly 4000 nationwide.

Nearly all of this was avoidable. Trump just didn’t give a shit and didn’t listen to anyone but the know nothings feeding him what he wanted to hear.

Among all presidents, he will be forever known as the worst president of all time whose dumbfuckery and know nothing worldview killed thousands (now) and expected 100,000 or more (best case scenario) or millions (worst case scenario) because he delayed any kind of national response to the pandemic.

Even now he’s failing to do anything to curb the spread. He’s left it to the haphazard approach of the states, which means that while SFO might be bending the curve, it’ll be overtaken by neighboring states that don’t - like Arizona.

The hospital projections here: covid19.healthdata.org

… already look too conservative for some places. Example: projects Louisiana to have 39 deaths today, so far the count is 54, above the error bar on their estimate.

For the US today, the estimate is in the range of 638-781 with a most likely value of 719. The US count today is already at 709 (on UTC time)- after the day is over we’ll have a better count of today.

There will be a lot of daily variation, part of the natural variation in not only infections and deaths but the reporting system.

Still, I think modelers may have presumed Americans will follow lockdown orders more than is actually happening. I was at the grocery store this afternoon, and it seemed like the busiest it has been since state-wide lockdown started (on 19 Mar.) People will get antsy, and by next weekend I wonder how many people will just ignore shelter-at-home advice?

People will get antsy, and by next weekend I wonder how many people will just ignore shelter-at-home advice?

Lockdown and shelter in place is haphazard and not consistent, even within the states that have them. Some localities are doing better than others.

But there’s states with not even the bare minimum, and the effects of that will be felt for the rest of the year (and next).

What we can’t say or know is whether one of the Americans was a carrier there, and spread it to others, only to return home after.

TSA isn’t screening the departures - only on the arrivals for international flights, and domestic flights aren’t getting screened in any systematic way at all.

There’s a thread here by U of Washington Prof. Carl Bergstrom saying precisely this:

3. A few days later, my biggest concern remains around the framing of the model. This is a model of successful suppression of the epidemic. Moreover if I understand correctly, it assumes strong measures by all states with efficacy (if not severity) comparable to Wuhan.

4. The assumption underlying this model is that social distancing will be implemented and *will work*.

That makes this a best-case scenario model, in contrast with e.g. the first Imperial College model wherein suppression fails and 1.1 to 2.2 million Americans die.

5. My grave concern is that this distinction has is not being made in the news reports about the model, and that it is lost on or ignored by politicians eager to for a more optimistic forecast than Imperial College provided.

6. The shaded regions are being interpreted almost everywhere as spanning the best and worst case scenarios.

I believe they are instead something like uncertainty ranges on the best-case scenario of successful suppression.

re: #353 garzooma

Yes, the model has rather significant uncertainty:

Compared to licensed capacity and average annual occupancy rates, excess demand from COVID-19 at the peak of the pandemic in the second week of April is predicted to be 64,175 (95% UI 7,977 to 251,059) total beds and 17,309 (95% UI 2,432 to 57,584) ICU beds. At the peak of the pandemic, ventilator use is predicted to be 19,481 (95% UI 9,767 to 39,674). The date of peak excess demand by state varies from the second week of April through May. We estimate that there will be a total of 81,114 deaths (95% UI 38,242 to 162,106) from COVID-19 over the next 4 months in the US. Deaths from COVID-19 are estimated to drop below 10 deaths per day between May 31 and June 6.

When your two sigma values span a factor of 4, then your data is highly noisy.

I was relying on that model for estimating when we might relax our family lockdown—hoped for a haircut in June. If it relies on everyone doing the right thing, I’m going to have hair down to my shaggy klarn before this is controlled.

Alabama will make it a point not to do everything right.

My own experience today compared to the prior 8 days of the lockdown:

1) in the early morning the road noise was considerably more (this has something to do with the weather and the vertical temp profile, but the prior days were very quiet.)
2) local gas station had several cars at the pump (prior days there were at most one.)
3) grocery store parking lot was fuller than in prior days (and it’s only the middle of the week, so not a payday, and at the end of the month the grocery stores are quieter anyway because people have spent their budget before the last day of the month.)

I hope the populace just doesn’t give up.

OK, that was weird. Whole house just shook in all 4 directions. Last time I felt something like that was when there was an earthquake down by Elko Nv. Scanner traffic is normal at this time. Like I said weird. And since I was looking out the window checking the weather I am pretty sure it wasn’t a wind gust or micro-burst.

Four teaspoons per quart of water. (per CDC)

Watch the wipes. Not all Clorox wipes are the same. There are a couple CDC/EPA lists on line.
