it means globally, nationally, or regionally, we’ve averted a worse disaster

get used to it:
- washing, social distancing, limiting contact, travel etc….
- these things are going to be with us for a good long while
- way more than a couple of ‘inconvenient’ months or even a year.
(at least for those of us who want to minimize the chances of getting or passing it.)

Fundies are notoriously handsy and hugsy. Years ago, I got hornswoggled into visiting a fundy church in Denton. At one point, the visitors were asked to raise their hands so they could be welcomed. I did so without thinking. Before I realized it, a woman I had never met before grabbed me, enfolded me in a bear hug, and squeezed so hard I could feel her nipples. I was astonished to say the least, though it was not the worst thing that could have happened. For the beans, it was 3 sprigs of fresh dill with I think 4 cloves of garlic and roughly a teaspoon each of mustard and dill seed, along with ~20 black peppercorns, slightly smashed in the mortar and pestle.

For the onions, 5 cloves of garlic, half a teaspoon each (roughly) of the mustard and dill seed and maybe 10ish black peppercorns.

Roughly 1Tbsp salt to 2 cups of water for the brine.

Even more striking, my wife, currently suffering a clear (untested) case of COVID-19, who is a nursing assistant in an old people’s care facility (EPHAD) has never taken the annual flu vaccination. Most of her cow-orkers didn’t either.

Why? We’re young (early 60’s), we’ve never been seriously ill, we’re immortal, right?

Trump’s idea of trying to open everything back up by easter was omega-level stupid, of course, but months on end of shelter in place really is going to hammer the hell out of the economy.

It’s pretty clear we are undertesting in the US and therefore undercounting the current number of infections. We know this because of data from other places where they are testing a lot - there’s no way that our hospitalization/death rate is that much higher. So if you figure that hospitalizations is ~20% of cases (and I’m including deaths in the hospitalization numbers, here, because if you die it’s a severe case and severe cases should be hospitalized) …we’re missing a lot of the milder ones.

Which makes sense, because we’re saving the tests for places where they’re the most useful, because our leadership is a giant fuck-up and completely unhelpful.

That said, you can sort of extrapolate backwards from the hospitalization rate (which is hard to come by, haha, super useful) or death rate (which lags by a LOT) to get a better estimate of the lower bound of cases we have in the country right now. Of course, since both of those are lagging indicators, it’s still going to undercount current cases.

The right thing to do is to assume that it is a lot more prevalent for the purposes of protecting yourself and your family but not to take that as a sign that the death rate is lower than believed (I think the best estimate of the infected-fatality ratio we have right now is ~0.7% from a study in The Lancet based off of Chinese data - CFR is pretty much always going to be higher than IFR during the epidemic because it is easier to measure, IFR has to be estimated - and this is still WAY HIGHER than the flu so stay the fuck home).

My hunch is that there are a lot of undiagnosed cases that aren’t going to get reported. In part because of the asymptomatic nature of this virus and in part because mild cases are not going to have access to testing. In theory, this means while we might see a 1% death rate for known cases, the overall number will be drastically lower. Of course, the other problem is that if the known cases overrun the health care system, we’re all fucked because there will be spill over effects for everyone not dealing with bad cases of COVID-19.

Currently in the US the CFR is around 2%, not 1%.

And here is what troubles me: in countries which have good health care systems (better than the US), the CFR is rising all the while the case numbers (and test numbers) are rising.

Germany’s CFR has risen quite a bit, now over 1%.

South Korea’s CFR has been rising, over 1%, and they’ve done a lot of testing.

Belgium’s CFR is now over 5%.

The Netherland’s CFR is now around 8%.

And these are places that have yet to get into the deep hole that Italy (and now Spain) have entered where the health providers are now unable to provide.

So SARS-Cov-2 is striking me like the original SARS and MERS. The latest variant is not as deadly as those two, but still considerable compared to the usual viruses we deal with.

Here’s a confession — I’ve never taken the annual Flu vaccination.

Even more striking, my wife, currently suffering a clear (untested) case of COVID-19, who is a nursing assistant in an old people’s care facility (EPHAD) has never taken the annual flu vaccination. Most of her cow-orkers didn’t either.

Why? We’re young (early 60’s), we’ve never been seriously ill, we’re immortal, right?

We’ve all got to take this shit more seriously.

I’ve gotten annual flu shots and have gotten the flu twice in the past 5 years. Not severe in either case, but enough to lay me low for a bit.

We would all do so much better if we required annual vaccinations for the flu and mandatory vaccinations for all the common diseases for which vaccinations are available - no exceptions except for medical necessity.

This isn’t about religious beliefs, because there aren’t any religious groups that object to vaccination. People who ignore vaccinations and public health are a public threat to all people.

This pandemic once again makes that explicitly clear.

All I can say is that in PA mail-in ballots must be requested no other reason is needed. Absentee ballots the person requesting the must have some sort of disability or be out of the area on the day of the election.

My son can get an absentee ballot anyway because of the PA rule “College students who are not registered to vote at their school address”. He is registered up here at our address, but has an apartment, goes to college and works 45 minutes south of here. But true, any voter can get a mail-in ballot sent to them without having to have a reason.

Well the doctor’s appointment was interesting. I got my temp taken at the front desk and it was normal. I filled out a questionnaire about where I’ve been and who I’ve been near (I brought my own pen), They had everything set up so that we were at least 8’ apart.

My doctor and I started talking about what’s going on and he kind of came down as someone who wants things to get back to normal asap. He was ragging on people who wouldn’t come in to work. He said a few things I would disagree with but I didn’t want to argue with a doctor, I just listened and replied “interesting”. We eventually started talking about hi-fi gear. I see him again in 6 months.

According to estimates for expected hospital resource use on this site, since last Friday the peak in Texas has been pushed from April 18 to May 5th. Even given expected inaccuracy that would indicate we’re at least flattening the curve somewhat. I just wish you could zero in to the major metro areas like Harris and Dallas county. I fear statewide averages could look very survivable, while our major city hospitals are facing a tidal wave.

NYC has experienced more deaths from covid19 than they’ve seen homicides in any single year since 1996. More deaths than 2018, 2017, and 2016 combined.

And that toll is rising steadily. So while the law and order types were demanding crackdowns and action for those murders, there’s no indication that they’ll go after Trump whose failures have resulted in more than 1000 dead in NYC and nearly 4000 nationwide.

Nearly all of this was avoidable. Trump just didn’t give a shit and didn’t listen to anyone but the know nothings feeding him what he wanted to hear.

There’s a thread here by U of Washington Prof. Carl Bergstrom saying precisely this:

4. The assumption underlying this model is that social distancing will be implemented and *will work*.

We estimate that there will be a total of 81,114 deaths (95% UI 38,242 to 162,106) from COVID-19 over the next 4 months in the US. Deaths from COVID-19 are estimated to drop below 10 deaths per day between May 31 and June 6.

My own experience today compared to the prior 8 days of the lockdown:

1) in the early morning the road noise was considerably more (this has something to do with the weather and the vertical temp profile, but the prior days were very quiet.)
2) local gas station had several cars at the pump (prior days there were at most one.)
3) grocery store parking lot was fuller than in prior days (and it’s only the middle of the week, so not a payday, and at the end of the month the grocery stores are quieter anyway because people have spent their budget before the last day of the month.)

I hope the populace just doesn’t give up.

Watch the wipes. Not all Clorox wipes are the same. There are a couple CDC/EPA lists on line.
